History of Mercury
  • 16th century- miners working in mercury mines in Austria and Spain die prematurely due to neurological
    problems, 
  • 1685 France mercury used in felt manufacturing mad hatters disease occurs. 
  • 1713 chemical factory, manufacturing mercury chloride caused increase in death rate in local town. 
  • 1800 French scientist use mercury as antiseptic, which continued until 1984 Merthiolate. 
  • 1900's thousands die from eating grain and fish impregnated with mercury in Minamata Bay, Japan: Northern Iraq, Guatemala, Ghana, and Almagorda. 

History of mercury in Dentistry

  • 1826 M. Taveau of Paris uses a silver-mercury paste as a dental filling paste. 
  • 1833 Crawcour brothers start dental practice in N.Y. city 
  • 1855 Amalgam war between dentist resulted in dissolution of the original American Society of Dental Surgeons and the formation of the present day A.D.A. endorsing the use of amalgams, for which they hold many patents. 
  • 1926 Dr. Stock showed the source of mercury vapor in mouth and the primary cause of mercury poison.
